ABOUT

Sound Healing, Breathwork & Reiki for Mind, Body & Soul

Lois Emmie is a certified sound healer, Reiki healer and breathwork facilitator. She trained with award-winning music composer Tim Wheater and has been passionate about music from a very young age.

OVERVIEW

Lois began singing professionally at the age of 16 after winning an EMI scholarship to study at the prestigious BIMM music school in West London. Since then, she has performed at the Aldwych Theatre in London’s West End, as well as at some of the capital’s most renowned jazz venues, including Ronnie Scott’s.

Lois first discovered the benefits of meditation and sound healing while recovering from postnatal depression. Experiencing their transformative effects inspired her to help others discover these simple yet powerful practices for reducing stress and supporting overall wellbeing.

Today, Lois runs weekly wellbeing sessions in West London, combining sound healing, breathwork, voice activation and somatic movement to create deeply restorative experiences.

Alongside her healing practice, Lois is currently studying for a Master’s degree in Psychotherapy, with a passion for bridging spirituality and science. Prior to this, she studied psychology, where her dissertation explored the effects of sound healing and demonstrated significant reductions in stress, anxiety and depression among participants. She hopes to continue her research by exploring the impact of breathwork on mental health and emotional wellbeing.

Above all, Lois is passionate about creating a welcoming environment where everyone feels heard, supported and connected with like-minded individuals.

Questions and Answers

Breathwork is a breathing technique that involves intentionally changing your breathing pattern. It can be used to improve physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.  There are different types of breathwork including box breathing, alternate nostril breathing, diaphragmatic breathing and pranayama breathing. Lois is trained and qualified to teach Soma breathwork. Soma breathwork uses rhythmic breathing synchronised to music. It also incorporates a breath hold, as made famous by the Wimm Hoff method of breathing. Lois decided to learn this form of breathwork as there is an abundance of research on its effect on mental health symptoms. Research suggests it can significantly reduce symptoms of stress and anxiety. It does this by lowering cortisol levels as well as blood pressure and heart rate, which can help to improve your sleep.  Lois uses breathwork in a way that incorporates breathing techniques, movement, meditation, sound, touch, and emotional release. Somatic movement Involves slow movement which pays attention to your internal and physical sensations in your body has less regard for the external appearance. Somatic movement can be used to let go of stress, relive pain, release muscle tension or improve posture. This can allow us to isolate patterns of tension we may have imbedded into our nervous systems and in turn this can allow us to develop new and healthy patterns of movement. Lois incorporates somatic movement and yin yoga (slow held stretches) within her classes as part of an integrative approach to healing.

Sound healing helps to influence brainwave frequencies, enabling a person to enter an altered state of consciousness like very deep relaxation. Sound healing can help to shift your brain waves to a certain frequency through a process called entrainment. Which is when your brain synchronises its waves to the same frequency of the gong and crystal bowls. These specific frequencies speak directly to the cells in your body to improve wellbeing and help to reduce stress. Lois uses various instruments in her classes including Gong, crystal bowls, chimes and flute.

Reiki is an ancient energy healing from Japan which channels the life force energy to heal every aspect of you mind, body and spirit. Reiki teaches that there are seven chakras within our bodies, the crown, the third eye, the throat, the heart, the solar plexus, the sacral and the root. When any one of these chakras become blocked with stagnant energy it can cause a whole host of physical and emotional symptoms. The reiki healing allows this energy to unblock, allowing you to speak your truth, expressing yourself and opens your heart after any heart break, grief or loss. You may feel these negative emotions which we have been taught to bury come up, if you do it is important to let the body do what it needs to do to heal and to let go, for your greatest good. Lois incorporates a reiki meditation within her sessions to help exaggerate the effects of the sound.

Voice activation encourages humming and singing in a group setting with the use of singing bowls or Shruti box as accompaniment. This allows for deep inner child healing for individuals who may have experienced any kind of trauma. This could be as simple as being told to “be quiet” or for being “too loud’ as a child. This allows individuals to rediscover themselves, to find their inner voice and rebuild their confidence and sense of self. Research suggests group singing has significant improvements in both mental and physical health. This is because it increases oxygen levels and triggers the release of oxytocin, which helps to improve mood and relieve stress. Lois utilises voice activation within her classes.

Contraindications

Slow rhythmic breathing techniques of SOMA Breath are safe to be used for anyone and can be beneficial for all individuals.

Forceful mouth breathing, prolonged breath holds and extended intense fast breathwork/hyperventilation for more than 5 minutes, should NOT be practiced in the case of any of the following:

  1. Severe/critical diseases or infections if it impairs your ability to breathe
  2. Severe uncontrolled hypertension (usually after a heart attack)
  3. Organ failure or late-stage terminal illness
  4. Pregnancy
  5. If you have epilepsy, a pacemaker, or irregular heart beat (Exception: your doctor gives you specific permission).

Some conditions (Eg: Tinnitus, hernias) may be aggravated by forceful mouth breathing, prolonged breath holds and prolonged, intense, rapid breathing/hyperventilation and careful attention to technique is required.
To learn how to do our techniques correctly and to see which techniques are most suitable for your situation we advise speaking to a certified SOMA Breath instructor.

Tinnitus

To stop the pressure that builds up in the head, aggravating tinnitus in certain cases, the participant has to make sure he’s doing the neck energy lock. This is when the person, when sitting down, lowers the neck a bit to create a “lock” preventing the air to go up.

Safety

We advice not do SOMA Breath in the case of:

  • Full stomach
  • Flue or fever
  • Driving a car or operating machinery
  • In water
